RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Rookie defensemen Charles Alexis Legault and Joel Nystrom picked up their first NHL points in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. It marks the first time in the Hurricanes’ team history that two defensemen posted their first points in the same game. And, it was the fourth time in Carolina history — since the relocation from Hartford — that any two players recorded their first points in a game. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Caleb Wilson had 24 points and No. 25 North Carolina dominated the second half to pull away from No. 19 Kansas 87-74 in a battle of college basketball bluebloods. Big man Henri Veesaar added 20 points for the Tar Heels. UNC also got a big showing from senior Seth Trimble with 13 of his 17 points after halftime. UNC made 24 of 36 shots after halftime. A lengthy cancer fight kept Vitale off the airwaves for two years until he returned late last season. CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Nate Sheppard had a 3-yard touchdown run with 40 seconds left and Duke got the two-point conversion to win at Clemson for the first time since 1980 with a 46-45 victory. The Blue Devils didn’t hesitate in lining up for the victory after Sheppard scored and quarterback Darian Mensah found Shamir Hagans for the winning points. Clemson has lost four games at home, the first time that’s happened since 1998. Mensah finished with 361 yards passing and a career-best four touchdown passes.
